Led by choirmaster Ulrich Paetzholdt, the Madiba Choir was founded in 2014. In addition to the parents, teachers and upper secondary students who form its core, the choir has since attracted a host of other great singers.
After working for many years with famous opera choirs, for instance at the Semper Opera House in Dresden and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Ulrich switched his focus to enthusiastic amateurs – both children and adults. As well as directing the Madiba Choir, he is also the director of Chorvereinigung Spandau and has conducted concerts at the Berliner Philharmonie and the Concert Hall of the University of Arts (UdK Berlin). On top of this, he teaches music at two schools, the Evangelische Schule Pankow and the Evangelische Schule Frohnau.

The Madiba Choir’s repertoire includes a wide range of musical works covering different centuries and a variety of languages, among them choral works by Henry Purcell, John Dowland and George Gershwin, world premieres of new classical pieces and chansons from the 16th century. As well as performing regularly at school events, for instance the Nelson Mandela School’s Festival of Nations, the choir also puts on concerts outside school. In April 2016, for example, it appeared together with the saxophone ensemble Saxonoras and subsequently performed a concert featuring music by Hans Leo Hassler and other 16th century composers, which included a double choir requiem by Francesco Cavalli, at Passionskirche Kreuzberg in November 2017.
The Madiba Choir is currently looking for further strong basses, tenors and sopranos. Good singers are invited to present themselves to the choir director. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday at 7 p.m. either in the Aula of the Secondary School, Pfalzburger Straße 30 or in the Foyer of the Primary School, Pfalzburger Strasse 23.
Our new start is coming up - and we are looking for new (tenor and bass) voices!
