Overview
Electives Year 7 / 8
In the years 7 and 8 of the Nelson Mandela School, the students take two-hour elective courses as part of the full-day program. In the other semester, all students take an additional double-hour physical education course to optimize their physical condition. The following Elective Courses will be offered in the 2022 / 2023 school year:

- Global Sciences
- World of Languages
- Independent Studies - Homework Lounge
- UNESCO
- School Newspaper
Participation in Elective Courses is mandatory, but it is not evaluated with a numerical grade, but is listed on the transcript as a remark.
Profile courses year 9 / 10
At the beginning of the year 9, an additional graded profile course of three to four hours per week is chosen, which is maintained over two school years until the end of the 10th grade and whose grade is included in the MSA final report. Profile courses offer a more in-depth and intensive examination of the chosen subject and can be a useful preparation for upper secondary school or an apprenticeship after the completion of the 10th grade. Profile courses are chosen online. After a trial week, the final course is determined and signed off by the parent or guardian. In the school year 2022 / 2023, the Nelson Mandela School offers the following profile courses:
- French (as an additional foreign language besides Spanish or as a mandatory requirement for the upper school if no foreign language has been taken since grade 7)
- Spanish (as an additional foreign language besides French or as a mandatory requirement for the upper school if no foreign language has been taken since grade 7)

- Geopolitics
- History / Politics

- Theatre
