Tower of Babel in Hanover

The annual Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen (national competition for foreign languages) now in its 25th year yet again was an exciting and entertaining three-day event in Hanover. This national competition has been successfully promoting children, who are avid students and users of foreign languages, since its inception in 1979. Meanwhile, it can boast an impressive number of over 15,000 young participants.

After having won first prize in Berlin Sprachenfest, Fionúir Mc Bennett, Isabelle Klopman and Zelda Waite were given the green light to represent NMS in the category TEAM SCHULE in Bundeswettbewerb für Fremdsprachen. With growing anticipation on 20 June they travelled from Berlin to the capital of Lower Saxony, which was buzzing with an influx of students from the ages of 11 to 15 years from all corners of Germany. The girls were in good hands with Ms Schulte also on board.

In order to take part in the competition the participants needed to fulfil the following criteria: create either an innovative movie, a creative theatre play or a game in a foreign language of their choice.

Fionúir, Isabelle and Zelda from NMS 9A and 9B Advanced Spanish Class created a thrilling 10-minute crime movie called Búscame.

On three days the students with the best creative contributions were given the opportunity to present their work in front of a large audience at Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen. A jury of experienced language experts and students who had taken part in Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen in previous years evaluated their work and awarded prizes to the lucky winners.

Talented mamma-jammas received awards such as a language course in China or the USA, book prizes, language certificates to name but a few.

Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen can rely on a network of strong partners such as Das Zentrum für Begabungsförderung, die Kultusministerkonferenz der Länder and the publishing company Cornelsen for valuable support and donations for prizes.

Taking part in Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen was an enriching learning experience on many levels, which will be treasured forever. This wonderful opportunity can only be recommend to all students. As the saying goes in Spanish: Quien no se arriesga no pasa la mar”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Schulte for accompanying us to Hanover and all teachers in the Spanish Department for encouraging us all the way. Muchas gracias!
