On the 22nd of February three students from the NMS had the opportunity to cook with 19-year-old star Chef Flynn McGarry from New York. The movie is about Flynn who started cooking and creating new dishes at a very young age. Flynn is a 15-year-old revolutionary. This culinary experience is something we will remember the next time we prepare a minimalistic gourmet dish. By the time Flynn was 10, he had transformed his parents’ house into a restaurant called Eureka, cooking several course menus for his family and friends.
After his great success where he was featured in a special New York Times magazine as America’s prodigy chef, Flynn went on to cook with very famous cooks in the exquisite Madison Park Hotel restaurants. Turning 19 now, Flynn has just opened his first gourmet restaurant this month in New York. Two 11th grade classes from NMS were invited along with students from the JFK school, to watch the film, participate in a discussion with Flynn and the film director together with the head of the Berlinale culinary section, Thomas Struck. Lunch was then served at the pop-up restaurant of the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Together with Flynn, his team, three students from JFK, Vladimir, Mo and I prepared a two-course meal for about 100 students. Getting to know Flynn a bit better (through his biographical movie and meeting him) gave me an insight on his character and success. He is a genius of our generation and his story inspired me to come up with my own recipes and get up on my feet when it comes to following your true passion. Thanks to Mrs Sekhon for organizing this special event and Mr Odjidjia for all the wonderful photos.
