Hybrid Learning Pilot at NMS

This will be the third Covid winter in which we have to deal with cold rooms, quarantine and uncertainty. And with independent learning situations, online collaboration and media literacy. Although it hasn’t always been easy, we learned a great deal from and about learning in online and hybrid situations, from observations and schoolwide surveys like this one. 

The Senate has invited NMS, as one of ca. 20 Berlin schools, to participate in the ‘Hybrid School’ pilot project, which will last for three years. This so-called Schulversuch has provided NMS with the status of pilot school for hybrid learning. This doesn’t include additional teaching hours or funding (that would be too good to be true in the current climate), but it gives us the option to maximise differentiation, combining the positives of remote learning with the restraints of the regular timetable - and to see how creative solutions can lead to a solid hybrid concept. 

Vom 10.11. bis zum 14.11.2021 haben 13 Siebtklässler*innen unserer Schule gemeinsam mit 15 Schüler*innen unserer polnischen Partnerschule aus Swidnica in Schlesien an Theater- und Kunstprojekten zum Thema “Inside-Outside” teilgenommen. Zum Schloss Morawa, das in einem ausladenden Landschaftspark liegt und  als gemeinnütziger Verein deutsch-polnische Jugendaustausche ermöglicht, sind wir unter der Leitung und Organisation von Bernard Szulc zum wiederholten Male gereist.

Zwei Lehrerinnen der polnischen Partnerschule, Florentine Baumann und Olivia Wiedmann, unsere US-amerikanische Kunst-Referendarin waren als künstlerisch-pädagogische Workshopleiterinnen dabei. Bernard Szulc hat die Theater-Workshops übernommen. Während unseres Aufenthaltes in Morawa haben wir uns in ein aktivierendes Bad aus drei Sprachen begeben, Schloss Waldenburg, Swidnica mit der Friedenskirche und die schöne Altstadt besichtigt und viele neue Freunde kennen gelernt. Zum Abschluss gab es eine Theatervorführung, die Ausstellungseröffnung zu den aus Gips entstandenen Plastiken und eine gelungene Abschiedsparty. Unser besonderer Dank geht an Bernard Szulc für die hervorragende Organisation und den jahrelangen intensiven Austausch mit unserem Nachbarland.

For the third time, an NMS upper secondary student won the first place in the international art contest IFAC in Tokyo, Japan. This year’s winner and representative of Germany is Mina Wang, now in Q1 Abitur. Her artwork was selected in the Ministry of Education and sent to Japan where it became part of an international exhibition of high school students from 17 countries. 

Mina would have been invited to fly to Tokyo for the awarding ceremony and the grand opening of the exhibition if the pandemic had not prevented her travel. We congratulate Mina and are proud to have artistic talents at NMS like her!

Vom 17. bis zum 19. September haben wir, 12 Schüler der 10b, an der Expedition des Duke of Edinburgh Awards auf den Stufen Bronze und Silber teilgenommen.
Wir trafen uns am Freitagmorgen am Bahnhof Fangschleuse, wo eine Einführung mit Frau Balsters, Frau Masing und ihrer Praktikantin durchgeführt wurde. Wir mussten nur noch unsere Routen für den Tag festlegen, uns von unseren Handys verabschieden und los ging´s!

In unserer Gruppe von sieben Mädchen haben wir uns zu Beginn gut durchgeschlagen. Trotz schwerem Gepäck und der Tatsache, dass alle Wege für uns gleich aussahen, konnten wir mühelos den ersten Checkpoint erreichen und dabei viele Frösche und Pilze bewundern. Von dort an wurde unsere tapfere Gruppe vor minimale Hindernisse gestellt, die darin resultierten, dass wir anstatt 14 Kilometern ca. 19 gelaufen sind, uns durch Spinnennetze kämpfen mussten und aufgrund der gigantischen Rücksäcke an Gleichgewichtsstörungen
litten. Jedoch nichts, was ein warmer Tee und ein paar Pep- Talks nicht lösen konnten. 

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu Platz 3 in der 3x 1.000 m Staffel der männlichen Jugend U18:
Liam Sherwood, Benjamin Lonicer, Ben Schubert! Liam erreichte dabei 2:53 Minuten.

The NMS Sport Club International team won third place in the Berlin-Brandenburg long relay championships

Congratulations to the SCI-NMS men's under 18 team on 3rd place in the 3x 1,000m relay race: Liam Sherwood, Benjamin Lonicer and Ben Schubert! Liam ran his relay in 2:53 minutes.

The Global Goals (aka SDGs) are overarching goals and therefore relevant to any subject. 6D recycled old magazines into new visuals of our planet‘s lungs; trees. They uploaded their tree Art onto the Global Goals website to add to the virtual forest of the ‚Artivism for Nature‘ project. Some of their art work can also be found in this collage. Wahlergebnisse Junior  BTW Deutschland gesamt / Results of the Junior election for the whole of Germany

Am 20. September fand an unserer Schule die Junior-Bundestagswahl statt. 528 Schüler*innen ab Klasse 9 waren zur Stimmabgabe aufgerufen. Der Politik Grundkurs Q3 organisierte im Vorfeld eine Podiumsdiskussion zur Unterstützung der Wahlentscheidung und verteilte Wahlbenachrichtigungen. Professionelle Wahlkabinen, eine Wahlurne und Stimmzettel mit den passenden Kandidat*innen für unseren Wahlkreis 80 sorgten für eine authentische Wahl. Die Ergebnisse unserer Schulwahl weichen dabei nicht nur vom offiziellen Ergebnis der Bundestagswahl, sondern auch vom Ergebnis der Bundes-Juniorwahl deutlich ab. Viel Spaß bei der Analyse der Ergebnisse!

Botschaft des Senats über NMS-Direktor Dr. Bauer/Message from the Senat via NMS Principal Dr Bauer

Bitte beachten Sie die von mir an Sie geschickten neuen Regelungen der Senatsverwaltung.

Ab nächster Woche (4. Oktober 2021) entfällt die Maskenpflicht für Schüler*innen und Beschäftigte der Grundschule. In den Wochen, in denen nur zweimal getestet wird, wird die Klasse dreimal getestet, in der ein*e Schüler*in positiv getestet wird. Der dritte Termin ist stets montags.

Nach den Herbstferien wird zwei Wochen lang dreimal getestet. Die Testtage sind Montag, Mittwoch, Freitag für alle Klassenstufen.

Starting next week (October 4, 2021), the mask requirement will be waived for elementary school students and employees. In the weeks when only two tests are given, the class in which a student tests positive will be tested three times. The third appointment will always be on Mondays.

After the fall break, testing will be done three times per week for two weeks. The testing days will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday for all grades.

Nach 2 Jahren fand endlich wieder der traditionelle Staffeltag der Schulen im Bezirk statt. Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler nahmen diese sportliche Herausforderung dankbar an, wir starteten mit je einem Team der Grundschule und der Sekundarstufe.
In der Sekundarstufe waren wir in allen 12 Staffelrennen über je 4x 100 m und 3x 800 m dabei.
Es waren spannende, interessante und stimmungsvolle Wettkämpfe.

9 Staffel-Teams der NMS erreichten eine Top-3 Platzierung!
Besonders hervorzuheben sind bei den Mädchen im WK I die Leistungen der 3x 800 m-Staffel (Leila Bittner Rosser, Lena Kirchner, Zoe Koller Hardy) mit Platz 1.
Damit hätten sie im letzten Berlin-Finale (2019) den 2. Gesamtplatz belegt. Einen 1. Platz gab es über 4x 100 m (Soleil Guy, Lena Kirchner, Zoe Koller Hardy, Ellen Croasdale).

Festival of Nations was lovely!

This year there was a concerted effort to take lots of pictures and try and capture a little of the special heart and soul of the FoN and through it the school and community.

On September 7, 2021, Dr. Bauer presented the students of the Diversity Task Force the Commitment Award of the German Association for Political Education.

The award was given for the outstanding political commitment of the students who, despite the pandemic, used their political capacity to act to benefit the school. For example, online workshops for elementary school classes were organized around Black History Month, an Instagram campaign on the same topic was launched, and a diversity workshop was offered to our teachers. This school year, the topic of Black History is coming into focus as part of a workshop series for Sek I and Sek II.
