Sophia Codjoe and Given Rapholo

The “Safe Room” pilot project will be established in the NMS Community from August 2021. The advisory team members are currently Sophia Codjoe (SozPäd) and Given Rapholo (teacher).

 The project is aimed at all students, teachers and parents in the NMS community. This project was developed in collaboration with the Diversity Group (parents), the DTF (students) and NMS teachers. It is a pilot project to set up a permanent body on the subject.

The project will be evaluated with students and teachers at the end of June 2022.

FESTIVAL OF NATIONS 2021

Due to rising rates of COVID & regulation changes, the Festival of Nations is being brought forward one week to September 11th.

Y7, Y8 and Y10 Elective Courses will have to be chosen from August 17 to August 21

NMS offers a broad range of Elective Courses for all students from Y7, A8 and Y10. The courses will take place on Tuesday from 2.15 to 3.50 pm unless scheduled on other days. All students will participate in at least one elective course. The attendance is mandatory. At the end of the semester, the students will receive a feedback certificate. The website received these pictures from the basic surfing course. 

This year NMS once again scored higher than the Berlin average grades for Abitur exams. NMS students scored an excellent 1.68 against an average of 2.3. This is despite all the very challenging conditions.

The IB International Baccalauriat grades have now been published and show that NMS has also achieved excellent results not just in the Abitur but in the IB. Average points were 33 in 2021 and one student achieved a grade of 45 points as opposed to 42 in 2020, this is the top possible grade for IB. Results are here for 2021 and here for 2020.

ÄNDERUNG DES BLÄSERKLASSEN ANGEBOTS IN DER PRIMARSTUFE

Liebe Eltern,

leider können wir im vor uns liegenden Schuljahr 2021-22 nicht mehr allen Schülerinnen und Schülern des 5. und 6. Jahrgangs die Teilnahme an unserem Bläserklassen-Projekt anbieten.

Das sind die wichtigsten Änderungen:

• im 5. Jahrgang wird eine  Klasse als Bläser-Profilklasse für zwei Schuljahre eingerichtet
• im 6. Jahrgang wird eine Klasse als Bläser-Profilklasse weitergeführt
• die anderen Klassen erhalten regulären Musikunterricht, gegebenenfalls mit eigenem Schwerpunkt (z.B. Chorarbeit)
• die Auswahl der Profilklassen wird zu Beginn des Schuljahres bekannt gegeben

Press and politicians keep stressing the failure of remote learning, the need for summer schools and the fact that 2020 and 2021 should be considered ‘lost years’. Interesting though, that both Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 graduated with better ‘Abitur’ results than the years before them. The Berlin average for this and last year was 2,3 (the years before 2,4). This year NMS even made it to the first place of all ISS schools (Integrierte Sekundarschulen) in Berlin, with an average of 1,68! It seems that online learning has its good sides after all, and should politicians simply ensure that all schools have a solid IT-infrastructure and a reliable learning platform, which allows real collaborative and personalized learning.

Gemeinsam mit über 50 Teilnehmer*innen vom Orchester der Nelson-Mandela Schule Berlin und weiteren Schüler*innen der Schule, dem SteenbeckPopChor (https://steenbeck-pop-chor.jimdofree.com), Schüler*innen des Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasiums Cottbus (https://steenbeck-gymnasium.de) sowie Freunden haben wir den Song Clocks von Coldplay arrangiert und aufgenommen. Das Pausenbrot ist ein Padlet für die ganze Schule: Mit verschiedenen Kunstkursen haben wir ein Padlet für die Homepage entwickelt, dass den Schüler*innen Tipps geben soll, was sie zum Essen so mitnehmen könnten.

Am 9.6.2021 wurde in der Nelson-Mandela-Schule am Standort P30 die vom Anne-Frank-Zentrum Berlin konzipierte Ausstellung zu Anne Frank eröffnet, die sich im Treppenhaus - für die gesamte Schulgemeinschaft zugänglich - vom EG zum 1. OG erstreckt. Die sieben besonders gelungen gestalteten, sehr informativen und für alle Schüler*innen leicht zu erfassenden Plakate wurden vom Pädagogischen Team der Klasse 9d, das diese Ausstellung initiiert und kuratiert hat, durch 25 Zitate von Anne Frank (auf Englisch) und sechs QR-Codes, die auf englischsprachiges Informationsmaterial verweisen, ergänzt. Mandy Reinert hatte sich als Kooperationsbeauftragte für Schule ohne Rassismus / Schule mit Courage bereits seit Langem um die Ausstellungsplakate bemüht, die jedoch erst jetzt, wo alle Schüler*innen der Schule zurückkommen durften, als Ausstellung gezeigt und genutzt werden sollten.

Permission has been given for us to start planning for a Festival of Nations 2021. We are strapping on our party shoes already! 

We hope to provide our big celebration with the things we have all come to expect - delicious food and drinks, fun and games, the book sale, the gift basket raffle, and plenty of entertainment.

Those classes staying together can already choose a country and start the plans and preparations for their stand. Going away somewhere interesting over the Summer break? Maybe bring back some items for the Festival!

“In my mind” ist eine introspektive Reise in unser Selbst. Warum sind wir so, wie wir sind?

 Als Collage verschiedener Momente vermittelt sie Ängste und Zwänge als auch Wünsche und Hoffnungen, die sich oftmals nur in unseren Köpfen abspielen.

Wie verändern wir uns, während wir erwachsen werden? Was macht das mit unserem innersten “Kubus”? Wie soll man bitte das Minenfeld aus Erwartungen und sozialem Druck unseres Umfelds überleben? Und was ist überhaupt mit der Zukunft?

 Wagt euch mit uns gemeinsam auf den Weg in die Innenschau und psychologischen Selbsterkenntnis.
